Impulse buyers, excessive online shoppers — don’t worry, this is a safe place

I think we have all been there….where we see someone post a product review and then instantly find ourselves on that products website paying for standard shipping. Or how about when you’re scrolling through Instagram stories, and suddenly that ad pops up of those to DIE for white Doc Martens’ slip on bootie dupe — I mean who can resist it?

Well, since we’re being honest here, I for one, can not resist the urge, hence the white booties sitting in my closet staring at me as I type away right this moment.

We have all, for lack of better words, fallen victim to the ways of the bullet/ hypodermic theory.

CommunicationTheory.Org has said it best when describing this theory, “The media (magic gun) fired the message directly into the audience ‘s head without their own knowledge. The message causes the instant reaction from the audience’s mind without any hesitation is called “Magic Bullet Theory”. The media (needle) injects the message into the audience mind and it causes changes in audience behavior and psyche towards the message. Audiences are passive and they can’t resist the media message called “Hypodermic Needle Theory”.

In simpler terms, they push products and services through the media, and in turn, we bite and engage in some way or another. Being a consumer myself, I am very vulnerable to media influence. When I see people I am similar to or someone influencer I love telling me what works for them, I automatically hope it works for me too. I then try out the products, buy the clothes or try to live my life similarly.

We see this happen often, where products are sold out just by the UGC promoting their product, whether it’s good or bad.

  1. Exercise bands/equipment: We have seen an increase for the need to exercise at home with the new pandemic and how people are seeing results from things they are doing in the comfort of their homes.
  1. Chlorophyll drops: These are dietary supplement drops that you place into your cup of water daily that promotes good health. Good health with your gut, helps with acne and weight loss. Once this hit the screens of Tik Tok, it blew up. Everyone is always looking for a “quick fix” and this is next up.
  1. Jordan Brand shoes: This right here is the most glaring example to me. Through the media and the absolute demand to be a part of the “hype”, these shoes sell out in seconds. They have pushed the idea that each shoe release is rare, therefore, making the demand so high. Media has also brainwashed society into thinking that if you don’t have these items that you are in some way lesser than others!
